Our History
Settled about 1769 and known as Bruce's Crossroad, our community was renamed in 1812 in honor of the evangelist John Summerfield.
Our church was established in 1888, meeting in a thatched arbor near the Brick School in a field off Scalesville Road. Challenged by our first minister, Reverend Archie Bowles, who one hot Sunday afternoon said, "Brethren, I am not going to preach another time until you build a church!" These people purchased land across the street and built a wood-frame sanctuary on the same plot of land where our church is located today.
More building has occurred over the years because of membership growth. Our new education building opened in 1978 and the beautiful sanctuary in 1981. The parking lot was paved in 1982, a picnic shelter/stew hut was added in 1985, and the new fellowship hall was completed in April 1991.
Presently our church has over 300 members. We want to be a growing influence for good in our community. Our goal is to be a friendly and caring church family.
